Visiting Madagascar in 10 days is far from enough to see the island, but since it’s sometimes all we get, I’ll show …
Itineraries for Traveling to Madagascar
You can choose between many different itineraries for traveling to Madagascar. It all depends on where you want to go, and what you want to experience.
Madagascar is a large island. In fact, it’s almost the size of France. Furthermore, large parts of the island are rather inaccessible. Planning a good itinerary is key to making the most of your vacation in Madagascar.
Many travel agencies and tour operators have pre-planned itineraries you can choose from. Perhaps you want to visit the south, perhaps the north or the west. Maybe you want to visit all of them. It’s possible. Definitely. But it takes a lot of planning, to make sure you can cover the distance within your timeframe.
The greatest issue when traveling within Madagascar is the lack of infrastructure. There are very few roads, which puts a limit on how fast you can move. The fastest way to get around is by plane between regions, so if you’re looking to visit both the south and the north, you’re better off making room in the budget for that.
Second to plane fare comes the 4-wheel drive. You can either drive yourself or hire a local driver. The latter is to be preferred, as the state of the roads is far from what you’re used to in the Western world. If you do choose to drive yourself, make sure to plan an itinerary with a lot of room for taking it slow. And make sure to rent a 4-wheeler. A regular car will not get you far, as many distances in Madagascar are covered off-road.
Pre-planned itineraries for traveling to Madagascar are quite recommendable. Simply because you’re sure to cover the route while you’re there. That way, you get the most out of your vacation. If your chosen travel agency doesn’t offer it on its website, simply have them customize it for you – anything’s possible with time and money.
