About Great Red Island

Madagascar Enthusiasts Committed to Eco-tourism.

The Story of Great Red Island

Karen first got to Madagascar right after Covid19,  met Dani -a passionate tour guide- and completely fell in love with the country. She could not stop writing about her experiences, and founded Great Red Island – a travel blog designed to help navigate traveling in Madagascar and attract tourists. The blog took off and many travelers contacted her for guidance, which lead her to team up with Dani on creating memorable trips all over Madagascar, and they realized; Hey! We are good at this!

The Team

Karen
Karen is Danish and went to Madagascar for the first time in 2021, where she—with Dani's help—fell in love with the country and its people. When she's not busy planning trips, she runs a hotel and a plantation at Ile aux Nattes and is passionately working to develop tourism on her island.
Dani
Dani is Malagasy and a real patriot. For more than twenty years, he's been working in tourism as a driver and guide. We can't count how many people he has safely guided through the long distances in Madagascar! What we do know is how much he loves his work and his country.

Why the Concept of Travel Planning?

Because it solves many problems for tourism in Madagascar. Simple as that.

Madagascar has a great potential for tourism – and tourism plays a big role in economic development and environmental protection.

But it is difficult to plan your own trip, and while Madagascar has a lot of very good agencies offering fantastic tours in Madagascar, they’re often very expensive – and with good reason! Administration and HR in Madagascar are difficult and heavy on resources.

Our simple travel-planning business model cuts these costs by 40% and thereby enables more travelers to visit and support.

Can You Plan Your Own Trip to Madagascar?

YES! Of course you can. It is not impossible. Do your homework, put in the time, and prepare yourself for an adventure. But be ready for these challenges:

Planning Your Trip to Madagascar is Time Consuming

In Madagascar, tourism is underdeveloped and not at all digital. Online resources are limited - especially in English. Many of the best places to stay and visit don't have a websites - or even WhatsApp. Emails can go without replies for weeks.

The list goes on.

Getting the Most Out of Your Time in Madagascar is an Art

Lacking infrastructure is one of Madagascar's biggest problems when it comes to tourism. It takes a long time to travel a short distance. If your trip is not well planned, you likely waste precious vacation days.

You have limited vacation time, and you deserve to get the most out of it.

Foreign Language Skills are Limited in Madagascar

If you know French, you're likely to get by in the more touristic areas - but in the rural areas, that won't help much. And do you not still carry your school French, good luck!

Having a Malagasy-speaking support by your side will save you a lot of trouble and assure you a lot of comfort!
