Welcome to Antananarivo
Your grand Malagasy adventure begins in the capital. Upon landing at Ivato International Airport, you will be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel. Before leaving the terminal, your guide will assist you in withdrawing local currency from the ATM and securing a local SIM card with a data package to ensure seamless connectivity. Depending on your arrival time, spend the afternoon relaxing or taking a gentle exploratory stroll around the local neighborhood.
The Sacred Royal Hill & Capital Culture
Today, dive deep into the history of Antananarivo—the historic "City of a Thousand Warriors." Your exploration begins at Ambohimanga, a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site and ancient royal citadel. Here, you will learn about the island’s early kingdoms and the traditional ancestral culture that remains a cornerstone of Malagasy life. In the afternoon, return to the modern side of the city for a vibrant tour of the capital, including a visit to the famous central market.
Journey to the Handicraft Capital
Leave the bustling capital behind as we drive south along the iconic highland route toward Antsirabe. The journey takes you through a beautiful, rolling landscape defined by dramatic volcanic hills and vibrant, terraced rice paddies. Upon arrival in this historic town—famous for its thermal springs and elegant architecture—check into your boutique hotel and spend a relaxed evening soaking in the cool highland air.
Volcanic Lakes & Master Craftsmen
Spend the day discovering the deep traditions and artistry of the highlands. We begin with a drive to a breathtaking volcanic crater lake filled with deep emerald water, rich with local legends. Afterward, embark on an immersive handicraft tour through local artisan workshops to watch master craftsmen transform zebu horns into intricate sculptures and recycle tin materials into vibrant toy models. End your afternoon with a fun, traditional rickshaw ride through the town's wide avenues.
Crossing East to the Primary Rainforests
Today we wave goodbye to the highlands and drive east toward the lush, misty cloud forests of Andasibe. To break up the drive, we will stop at an endemic species breeding program, offering an incredible close-up look at Madagascar's extraordinary chameleons, geckos, and reptiles. Arrive at your rainforest lodge by late afternoon, just in time to listen to the evening sounds of the jungle.
Into the Forest Canopy & A Nocturnal Walk
Dedicate your morning to exploring a world-renowned rainforest reserve. Accompanied by a specialist local tracker, you will trek through the dense canopy to spot exotic birds, rare flora, and various lemur species—including the magnificent Indri, the largest living lemur on Earth, famous for its haunting, song-like calls. After a relaxed afternoon, head back out after dark with your flashlights for a guided roadside night walk to discover active mouse lemurs, camouflaged chameleons, and unique frogs.
The Pangalanes Canals & The Elusive Aye-Aye
We hit the road in the morning for a drive toward a charming lakeside village. From here, we trade our vehicle for a motorboat and embark on a scenic cruise along the historic, historic Pangalanes Canals. After checking into your nature lodge, the main event awaits at nightfall: a boat excursion to a private island sanctuary for a rare, unforgettable encounter with the critically endangered and fascinating nocturnal Aye-Aye primate.
Up Close with Lemurs & Coastal Toamasina
Enjoy a beautiful morning exploring the private reserve, where several friendly lemur species are known to come incredibly close to visitors. Following a fresh local lunch, we board our boat for a peaceful cruise further north along the waterways. Upon arriving in Toamasina, the country’s largest port city, spend your evening exploring the wide, palm-lined avenues and the rich scents of the local spice markets.
The Deserted Lighthouse Island
Put on your swimwear and step into a boat for a magnificent half-day excursion to a tiny, isolated coral island just off the coast called Ile aux Prunes. This hidden gem houses one of the oldest and tallest historic lighthouses in Madagascar, surrounded by pristine white sand. Spend your morning feeling like a true Robinson Crusoe as you snorkel in the vibrant coral reef or walk paths across the island. Afterward, return to the mainland and drive to the quiet coastal village of Mahambo.
Crossing to Island Paradise (Island Day 1)
In the morning, we head to the local harbor to board the ferry for a scenic 3-hour crossing to the tropical island of Sainte Marie. If traveling between July and September, keep your eyes on the horizon—this crossing doubles as an incredible whale-watching safari as majestic humpback whales migrate through these exact waters. Upon pulling into the port, an island tuk-tuk will drive you south, where a traditional wooden dugout canoe completed the journey, paddling you across a turquoise lagoon directly onto the car-free shores of Ile aux Nattes.
The Ultimate Island Hideaway (Island Days 2–4)
To preserve the pure spirit of Mora Mora (slowly, slowly), these days are kept entirely flexible. You can spend your time snorkeling the coral reef right outside your door, taking a relaxed 2-hour walk to circumnavigate the entire island on foot, or crossing over to Sainte Marie to explore historic pirate cemeteries and mangrove forests. If traveling between July and September, you can also book a dedicated boat safari to watch humpback whales breaching in the bay. Your only objective is to completely disconnect.
Return Flight to the Capital
We trade the beach paths for the skies as you take a short, scenic domestic flight from the island back to Antananarivo. Upon arrival, a private transfer will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in the historic city center. Enjoy an excellent final dinner at a local restaurant and use the evening to pick up some world-class Malagasy vanilla or chocolates.
Farewell to Madagascar
Enjoy a slow, relaxed morning in the capital. Depending on your flight schedule, a private transfer will pick you up from your hotel and bring you safely to Ivato International Airport for your international connection back home, leaving you with memories of an extraordinary journey. Veloma!
