The Ultimate Malagasy Coast & Islands in 14 Days Tour

The Ultimate Malagasy Coast & Islands Tour

A 14-Day Beach Escape

Why Should You Choose This Trip

Deep Travel for the Soul

This itinerary is designed for travelers who don't want to just look at a destination through a car window, but want to truly sink into it. By combining an intense, expert-led wildlife route through Andasibe and the Pangalanes Canal with a full 10 nights by the coast perfectly divided between Pangalane, Mahambo, Sainte Marie and Ile aux Nattes, we have created an incredible coastal escape. You will get the absolute best of Madagascar's rainforest biodiversity before settling into an island paradise where you can experience majestic humpback whales (if traveling between July and September) and completely let the Mora Mora lifestyle take over.

Whale-Watching Island Crossing

Turn a travel day into a bucket-list safari. The ferry crossing to Sainte Marie sails directly through the migratory path of humpback whales, giving you a front-row seat to breaching giants if traveling between July and September.

The Rare Aye-Aye Island Safari

Travel deep into the Pangalanes Canal for an exclusive night excursion to a private island sanctuary. Watch the world's most mysterious, nocturnal primate foraging in the trees just feet away from you.

The Dual Island Experience

Enjoy the best of both worlds with three days exploring the historic, sweeping paths of Sainte Marie followed by three days of absolute, car-free tranquility on the shores of Ile aux Nattes.

Welcome to Antananarivo

Your grand Malagasy adventure begins in the capital. Upon landing at Ivato International Airport, a seamless private transfer will be waiting to whisk you away to your hotel. Before leaving the airport terminals, your guide will assist you in withdrawing local currency from the ATM and setting up a local SIM card with a data package to keep you connected. Spend your first afternoon unwinding in a comfortable urban setting, resting up for the exciting journey ahead.

Day 1
Day 2

Historical Hills & Journey into the Rainforest

After checking out of your hotel, your expert guide will pick you up to begin the trip with a visit to Ambohimanga. This sacred UNESCO World Heritage site is the ancient cradle of the royal Merina family, where you will be enchanted by stories of early kings, queens, and ancestral traditions that remain the heartbeat of Malagasy culture today. Afterward, you will begin a scenic 4-to-5-hour drive eastward toward the rainforests of Andasibe. Along the way, we will break up the drive with a one-hour stop at a specialized breeding facility to see endemic chameleons and reptiles up close. Arrive at your rainforest lodge by dinner time, where you can relax on the terrace and keep an eye out for curious lemurs swinging along the forest edge.

Into the Canopy & Into the Dark

Today, there is absolutely no rush. Wake up to the incredible natural symphony of Madagascar’s most popular rainforest reserve. After a relaxed breakfast, your driver will take you to the park entrance to meet your specialist tracker. Together, you will embark on a 2-to-3-hour day walk, searching for various lemur species, exotic birds, rare amphibians, and hidden reptiles while learning about flora found nowhere else on earth. Spend your afternoon at leisure—perfect for updating your travel journal or taking a stroll through the local village. As night falls, grab your torch for an exciting 1-hour roadside night walk to discover nocturnal eyes catching the light, from tiny mouse lemurs to sleeping chameleons.

Day 3
Day 4

Winding Waterways & The Sacred Aye-Aye

We hit the road early to beat the morning traffic and head further east toward the coast. Your driver will bring you through changing landscapes to Manambato, a cozy lakeside village, where we trade our 4x4 for a motorboat. Enjoy a peaceful 1.5-hour cruise along the historic Pangalanes Canals to a spectacular private reserve lodge. After settling into your room, take a guided walking tour of the reserve to get up close with friendly lemur species and learn about local spices. When darkness sets in, board a boat for an exclusive 1.5-to-2-hour excursion to a nearby island sanctuary. Here, you will have a rare opportunity to watch the elusive, strange-looking Aye-Aye primate use its specialized fingers to extract fresh coconut meat from the trees.

The Drive-Through of Local Flavors

Enjoy an early breakfast surrounded by the calm waters of the canal before catching the boat back to the mainland. Your driver will be waiting at the lakeside to begin a long but breathtakingly beautiful drive up the coast. To experience Madagascar like a true insider, we will sample a wide variety of delicious local snacks from the island's ultimate "drive-through"—the vibrant street vendors lining the route. By late afternoon, arrive in the quiet coastal town of Mahambo, check into your beachside accommodation, and let the ocean breeze wind you down.

Day 5
Day 6

Laid-back Coastal Living

Dedicate a whole day to the sweet art of doing nothing in Mahambo. This sleepy coastal town is famous for its empty beaches, gentle surf, and completely relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Sleep in late, enjoy a long, fresh seafood lunch, and stretch out on the sand. This is your perfect transition day before crossing over to the tropical islands tomorrow

Ferry to Sainte Marie (Island Day 1)

We check out of the coast and head to the local harbor to board the ferry for a scenic 3-hour crossing to the tropical island of Sainte Marie. If traveling between July and September, keep your eyes on the horizon—this crossing doubles as an incredible whale-watching safari as majestic humpback whales migrate through these exact waters. Upon arrival, check into a beautiful beachside lodge on Sainte Marie and spend the afternoon taking in your first island sunset.

Day 7
Day 8 & 9

Exploring Sainte Marie (Island Days 2 & 3)

Spend two full days discovering the rich history and dramatic landscapes of Sainte Marie. To embody the Mora Mora (slowly, slowly) philosophy, these days are highly flexible. You can rent a bicycle or quad bike to explore the lush interior, hire a local guide to visit the historic 17th-century pirate cemetery, wander through mangrove forests, or book a dedicated boat safari to track humpback whales breaching in the bay (if traveling between July and September)

Crossing to Car-Free Paradise (Island Day 4)

Today you trade one paradise for another. A traditional island tuk-tuk will drive you to the southern tip of Sainte Marie (La Pointe). From there, you will step into a traditional wooden dugout canoe (pirogue) to be paddled across a crystal-clear, shallow turquoise lagoon directly onto the shores of Ile aux Nattes. Check into your quiet eco-lodge right on the sand.

Day 10
Day 11 & 12

True Island Bliss on Ile aux Nattes (Island Days 5 & 6)

Welcome to a pocket of the world completely free of cars and traffic. Your final two island days are purely for relaxation and slow exploration. You can put on your mask and snorkel right off the beach to explore the vibrant coral reef, take a gentle 2-hour walk to circumnavigate the entire island on foot, or sip fresh coconut water under a palm tree while listening to the rhythm of the tide.

Flight Back to the Capital

We trade the island pace for a short domestic flight from Sainte Marie back to Antananarivo. Upon arrival at the national airport, a private transfer will pick you up and take you to your city hotel, where you can enjoy an excellent final dinner and pick up any last-minute local vanilla or spices.

Day 13
Day 14

Farewell to the Red Island

Your tour concludes today. Depending on your schedule, a private airport transfer will ensure you reach the international terminal in plenty of time for your flight back home. Veloma!
