Welcome to Antananarivo
Your journey begins in Madagascar's vibrant capital city. Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by your expert guide. Before heading to your accommodation, we will assist you in securing local currency from an ATM and setting up a local SIM card with a data package to ensure seamless connectivity. Depending on your arrival time and energy levels, spend the afternoon relaxing or taking a gentle exploratory stroll around the local neighborhood.
Journey to Volcanic Ampefy
Today we head west of the capital to Ampefy, a region famous for its rich volcanic landscapes and dramatic scenery. The drive takes about half a day, giving us plenty of opportunities to pull over at scenic viewpoints and wander through small local markets. After checking into your hotel, we set off for our first major highlight: a visit to the roaring Lily Waterfall.
Geysers, Lakes, and the Center of Madagascar
Pack your walking shoes and swimwear for a day of natural wonders. We will explore the sweeping landscapes around Lake Itasy and enjoy a refreshing dip in the geothermal geysers of Analavory. Afterward, stand in the exact mathematical center of Madagascar to take in the panoramic views, before winding down in the local village to experience the true, relaxed Mora Mora rhythm of the island.
Heading East to the Rainforest
Today is a significant travel day as we cross the island toward the lush eastern rainforests of Andasibe. To break up the 10-hour drive, we will play local Malagasy music and enjoy the ever-changing scenery outside your window. En route, we will stop at an endemic species breeding program, offering your first close-up encounters with Madagascar's extraordinary chameleons and reptiles.
Deep in the Rainforest Canopy
Dedicate the entire day to exploring the world-renowned Andasibe rainforest reserve. In the morning, you will trek through the park for a chance to spot endemic birds, rare flora, and various lemur species—including the iconic Indri-Indri. After a relaxed afternoon in the local village or at your lodge, we head back out after dark for a guided roadside night walk to discover nocturnal frogs and camouflaged sleeping chameleons.
The Pangalanes Canal & The Elusive Aye-Aye
We hit the road in the morning for a half-day drive toward Manambato, a charming village nestled along the shores of a peaceful lake. From here, a motorboat picks us up for a scenic 1.5-hour journey along the historic Pangalanes Canals. After checking into your reserve lodge, the main event awaits at nightfall: a boat excursion to a private island for a rare, unforgettable look at the critically endangered and fascinating Aye-Aye primate.
Lemur Encounters & Coastal Toamasina
Enjoy a relaxed morning before embarking on a walking tour of the private reserve, where several curious lemur species are known to come incredibly close. After a fresh local lunch, we board a boat for a peaceful 4-hour cruise further north along the beautiful Pangalanes Canals. Upon arriving in Toamasina, the country’s largest port city, spend your evening exploring the sights and rich scents of the historic Bazar Be market.
Northbound to the Coast
Today is all about the journey as we drive further north along the coast toward the harbor town of Soanierana Ivongo. The road conditions here can be an adventure in themselves, so we take our time, making plenty of stops to stretch our legs and admire the views. We arrive in the afternoon, just in time to enjoy a traditional dinner and experience the local atmosphere of this coastal town.
Crossing to Island Paradise (Ile aux Nattes)
An early morning start brings us to the local ferry for a scenic 1.5-hour crossing over to the island of Sainte Marie. Upon arrival, a classic island tuk-tuk will drive you to the southern tip, where a small traditional boat completes the journey, carrying you directly onto the pristine shores of the car-free paradise, Ile aux Nattes. Welcome home for the next week!
Unwinding in True Island Style
The central highlight of your vacation is a week completely dedicated to the ultimate island escape. To preserve the pure spirit of Mora Mora, we keep these days open and flexible. Whether you choose to snorkel in the turquoise lagoons, explore the lush interior on foot, visit nearby Sainte Marie, or simply relax on the beach with a coconut in hand, your only objective is to soak up the true island lifestyle.
Return Flight to the Capital
We trade the beach for the skies as you take a short domestic flight back to Antananarivo. Upon arrival, your trusted driver will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in the historic Isoraka district. This vibrant neighborhood is perfect for your evening, offering excellent local restaurants, boutique shopping, and a lively cultural scene.
The Royal Hills & Urban Exploration
Spend your final full day diving deep into Malagasy history. We begin at Ambohimanga, a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site and old royal hill where you will learn about the island’s kingdoms and traditional ancestral culture. In the afternoon, we return to the modern side of the city for a tour of the bustling capital, including a visit to the famous Analakely market—the perfect place to pick up some local vanilla or spices before your final night on the island.
Farewell to Madagascar
Enjoy a slow, relaxed morning in the capital. Depending on your flight schedule, your driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you safely back to Ivato International Airport for your international connection home, leaving you with memories of an extraordinary island adventure. Veloma!
