When planning a vacation to the east of Madagascar, you probably wonder what to do in Sainte Marie. Sainte Marie consists of …
Il Sainte Marie
Il Sainte Marie is a tropical island located in the east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Historically it was a pirate island, and is believed to have been the home of many legendary pirates – William Kidd included.
Today Sainte Marie (or Nosy Boraha as it is called in Malagasy) is one of the most popular vacation spots in Madagascar and for good reason! The island is a tropical beauty from north to south. The rainforest climate is responsible for the rich green vegetation, and the long coastline covered in palm trees makes for the perfect surroundings for relaxation.
Il Sainte Marie is around 60 km. long. The north is at a higher altitude and hosts waterfalls, natural springs, and unspoiled nature. The south is the home of the main town Ambodifotatra, which is the center of civilization in the area.
The south is covered in magnificent beaches, great bars, hotels, and restaurants. Furthermore, it’s the home of the local airport Sainte Marie.
The main town Ambodifotatra is located right by a hollow bay in which the island Il aux Forbans rests. Il aux Forbans was the center of pirate activities in the 16th century, as the bay offered a safe place for the pirates to relax.
Il Sainte Marie offers a variety of things to do. Snorkeling and diving on the large double-barrier reef surrounding the island. Motorbiking in the north. Kitesurfing. Wildlife watching. Sailing. Visiting local sites. Resting on beautiful beaches. Drinking tropical cocktails. The options are numerous.
